Albuteral
Mechanism of Action
Albuterol is a sympathomimetic and a bronchodilator . It relaxes smooth
muscles of the bronchial tree and peripheral vasculature by stimulating
adrenergic receptors of the sympathetic nervous system.

Indications
Relief of bronchospasm in patients with Chronic Obstructed Pulmonary
Disease.
Wheezing, rales in the patient with respiratory difficulties

Packaging
2.5 mg in 3 ml (ampule)
Drug box inventory = 4

Onset & Duration
Onset: 5-15 after inhalation
Duration: 3-4 hours

Doses and Administration
Give 2.5mg (3 ml) via nebulizor
First dose may be given with Atrovent and/or nebulized lidocaine
May be repeated every 5 min. refractory to last dose

Precautions
May cause tachy-disrythymias
May cause hypertension
Excessive doses can cause:
Restlessness
Palpatations
Dizziness

Pediatrics
If patient is greater than 1 year old or 20 pounds then:
Administer 2.5 mg (3.0 ml) via nebulizer @ 8-10 lpm O2
First dose may be given with Atrovent and/or nebulized lidocaine
May be repeated every 5 min. refractory to last dose
