Dextrose 50%
Mechanism of Action
Dextrose 50% is a form of the six-carbon sugar d-glucose. This
is the same as the carbohydrates used by the body.

Indications
Any patient with altered mental status of an unknown origin.
Altered LOC with low glucometer reading (normal 80 -100).
Siezure patient refractory to first dose of diazepam.

25 Gm in 50 ml (pre-pack)
Drug box inventory = 2

Onset & Duration
Onset: Usually less than 1 min.
Duration: Dependant on the patient's glucose levels prior to
administration.

Doses and Administration
Give 25 Gm (50 ml)   slow IV bolus.
If no positive effects give 25 Gm (50 ml)  slow IV bolus.

Precautions
Necrosis may occur at site if IV is not patent.
Patient may experience burning, warmth at site.
Use with caution in the patient with a suspected stroke, get
glucose level prior to administration.
Use with caution in the known alcoholic, patient may have
thiamine deficiencies.

Pediatrics
Use Dextrose 25% in pediatrics.
