Ipratropium Bromide
Mechanism of Action
Ipratropium Bromide is a anticholinergic (parasympatholytic) agent that
inhibits vagally-mediated reflexes by antagonizing the action of
acetylcholine, the transmitter released from the vagus nerve. Atrovent
will be effective in dilating the larger airways. This should be used in
combination with albuterol, which will dilate the smaller airways.

Indications
Relief of bronchospasm in patients with Chronic Obstructed Pulmonary
Disease.
Wheezing, rales in the patient with respiratory difficulties

0.5 mg in 2.5 ml (ampule)

Onset & Duration
Onset: 5-15 min
Duration: 4-8 hours

Doses and Administration
Give 0.5 mg via nebulizer with 2.5 mg albuterol

Precautions
May cause coughing
May cause dizziness
May cause insomnia, restlessness
May cause nausea

Same as the adult
