Morphine Sulfate
Mechanism of Action
Morphine is effective treatment for ischemic chest pain and acute pulmonary edema.  It has
both analgesic and hemodynamic effects. It increases vascular capacity and reduces
vascular resistance. In doing so, it decreases myocardial oxygen demand.

Indications
Treatment of pain and anxiety in AMI patients
Treatment of patients with acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema
Treatment of pain in traumatic injury

Packaging
5 mg in 1 ml (pre-pack)
Drug box inventory = 2

Onset & Duration
Onset: 1-3 min
Duration: 20-30 min

Doses and Administration
Give 5 mg slow (.5 ml per min)  IV bolus
If ineffective or, 5 mg slow IV bolus
Alternative:
5 mg SQ
Repeat 5 mg SQ if transport time >30 min
Precautions
Respiratory depressant
Small doses in intervals make respiratory depression less likely than large single doses
Hypotension in volume depleted patients

Pediatrics
Dose: 0.1 mg/kg slow IVP up to 10 mg
Not for any patient under 2 years old
Only to be used for isolated extremity fractures
