Ondansetron (Zofran)
Mechanism of Action
A selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist.

While ondansetron's mechanism of action has not been fully characterized, it is
not a dopamine-receptor antagonist.

Activation of vagal afferents may also cause a central release of serotonin
through the 5-HT3 receptors and initiate the vomiting reflex.

Indications
Nausea or active vomiting

4 mg in 2 ml (vial)
Drug box inventory = 1

Onset & Duration
Onset: 3-5 min
Duration: < 12 hours

Doses and Administration
Give 4 mg IV bolus
If no IV, 4 mg IM

Precautions
Possible Seizures
Transient visual disturbances (usually in larger doses)
Chemotherapy patients may already be on  an oral dose

Pediatrics
Not used in the GMVEMSC Protocol
